INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PHILOSOPHY AND CIVILIZATION
CALL FOR PAPERS
Dates:
Saturday, December 2, 2023
Time : 15.00 – 19.30
Venue:
On-site at St. Mary’s Hall Hendrikus – Widya Mandira Catholic University Kupang, Jl San Juan Penfui Timur
Conference theme:
Philosophy is an agent of civilization. Philosophical thoughts that have developed from century to century have triggered various forms of revolution and reform, including political, scientific, cultural, artistic, ethical and religious reforms. Since humans think freely, their actions, way of life, and social practices- or Culture for short- depend heavily on the paradigms and theories they produce about the world and life, about what is good and bad. As a passion “love of wisdom”, philosophy to a certain extent provides an understanding and meaning of the world, humans, life with all its challenges and hopes.
Philosophy and civilization are reciprocally related. Through the lens of philosophy, one can read about human civilization and movements for social change, as well as hopes for a better future. On the other hand, by designing human civilization, one can explore various models of philosophical thought that have changed the times. As Betrand Russell said, to understand an era or a nation, one must understand its philosophy, and to understand its philosophy, one must, to some extent, become a philosopher. Philosophy determines social and environmental changes, and conversely, social and environmental changes also influence philosophical reflection from time to time.
In relation to the role of philosophy as a systematic, critical and radical reflection, the Faculty of Philosophy Unwira Kupang is encouraged to build discourse and interpret the crisis of human civilization and efforts to create new hopes from a philosophical perspective. The hope is that through in-depth and creative reflection, research and writing about philosophy, the crisis of civilization and the future of humanity, we can broaden our global and national insight and awareness about the real problems of humanity that must be solved together.
